Seaport

Care, research and dissemination

Today, there are several initiatives in Pasaia working on research, conservation and dissemination of the rich historical legacy related to maritime culture.

ALBAOLA, THE SEA FACTORY OF THE BASQUES

WEB ALBAOLA

With the construction of historic vessels as its main activity, Albaola, The Sea Factory of the Basques, located in Pasai San Pedro, is an innovative space where artisan sea technology is recovered and enhanced. The Sea Factory is open to the public and distinguishes itself by its dynamism, the diversity of its activities and  its international projection.

The construction of the Nao San Juan, originally built in Pasaia in 1563, is currently underway. The San Juan, the best preserved and researched whaler of that time, is the symbol of the UNESCO’s Underwater Cultural Heritage.

APRENDIZTEGI, THE LANCE LEE INTERNATIONAL BOAT BUILDING SCHOOL

WEB LANCE LEE SCHOOL

The school recently inaugurated by Albaola is based on the model created by Lance Lee, forerunner of the teaching of traditional naval carpentry in the United States.  This pedagogical model prioritises the process of learning through practice from the outset and has the motivation of the students as its main axis. Since its inception, one of the great objectives of Albaola has been the recovery of traditional naval carpentry and its technology and techniques. With the implementation of this new and innovative school design, Albaola wants to make a contribution to recover sea heritage and, in general, its socialisation.

ITSAS GELA-MATER MUSEUM

WEB MATER MUSEUM

The non-profit association ITSAS GELA was created in Pasaia in 2001 by a group of Pasaia locals closely linked to the sea. It was born with the objective of publicising the wide range of possibilities offered by sea culture from a perspective of conservation and respect towards the environment and its people. To this end, they focus their work on developing measures that promote the activation of the fishing and cultural heritage by managing different activities and the MATER tuna fishing boat, the last classic tuna fishing boat on the Cantabrian Sea and a museum ship.

JAIZKIBEL DREDGER

Built in the Euskalduna shipyard in Bilbao in 1933, and declared of Cultural Interest, it is the only example built in the Basque Country using rivets which is left in Gipuzkoa. It was used for the dredging of the port of Pasaia until 1984. It can be found next to Albaola, The Sea Factory of the Basques
